New DIY Intervalometer

The Altoids version

I want to do more time-lapse photography without having to trigger the camera manually. I also didn’t want to spent over $100 for a professional model, so I built this one for about $20 (not including the empty Altoids tin). It’s a snug fit between the electronics, switches, 9V battery and wires, so the rubber bands keep it securely shut.

The switch on the bottom is on/off, other switch is for long or short periods between pictures. The potentiometer varies the time from 3 to 30 seconds (short setting) and 30 seconds to 4:30 minutes (long setting). At the other end is a 3.5mm phone jack that I plug the camera into.

Hopefully I’ll get out and use it tomorrow.

There’s a meme on Facebook where you post 25 random things about you, and then tag others to do the same. I was tagged today and this is what I posted.

Blurb Book From Our Costa Rica Trip

Pura Vida!

Today I received my Blurb book that I put together from our Costa Rica trip. It looks great.

It’s 50 pages long with enough text and captions to explain the trip and images, but it’s mostly a photo book.

Even though I had most of the text already written (from the blog) and the pictures were all ready to go (from prepping them for my flickr set), it still took me a full day to layout the book.

You can check it out here at Blurb.

I just installed the FlickrTag plugin for WordPress, which makes it much easier for me to include sets of images, and gives you a really nice lightbox to view them in. Go ahead, click on one…

Sweet, huh?

A Clear Day in LA

A Clear Day in LA

Flying into Los Angeles on an extremely clear day. The distant mountains are at least 50 miles away.

When I grew up in LA (the 60′s and 70′s) we had over 120 Stage 1 Smog Alerts per year – that meant that you shouldn’t play outside and you needed to curtail any unnecessary driving. At school, PE was cancelled. There would be 10 or so Stage 2 days each year where it was hazardous just to breath, so that was discouraged too. I remember days when you couldn’t see a block away, and maybe one day a year that looked like this.

Since 2003 there have been zero Stage 1 days.

NAMM, the interNAtional Music products association M (go figure) had it’s winter convention in Anaheim last week, and as usual Jason, Ryan and I headed down.

We changed our strategy this year, and headed first to the Taylor Guitar suite to get their performance schedule – Taylor sets up a stage with top notch sound and lighting, and they invite some of their artists to do sets. Once we knew their schedule, we spent the intervening hours on the exhibit floor. Here’s some highlights.

If you want to see all my pics, here’s my set on Flickr.

I don’t have a heading for this one:

Taylor Artists

Last year we saw Everclear among others in a room that holds an SRO crowd of maybe 200 people. This year we saw four artists, none of whom we knew. First up was Marc Seal. Marc is touring for Taylor this year, and played a combination of original music and a few covers – including a nice job on “Shine On You Crazy Diamond.”

It’s worth checking out Doyle Dykes’ videos on the Taylor website. He has a lightning fast fingerstyle that is unique and energetic.

I didn’t know Elliot Murphy before this show, even though he’s been around since the 70′s. He’s a folk-rock singer-songwriter with a soulful deep voice. He was accompanied by Olivier Durand – one of the most unique and interesting guitar players I’ve seen in a long time

I’m not a big country fan, so Jonalee White was kind of lost on me.

Guitars

Some of the guitars I loved:

Equipment

Vox had some nice new amps, my favorite was the “Night Train,” a 15w head that sounded beautiful and weighed a ton. I also have to update my Pro Tools – the new Pro Tools 8 is a giant upgrade from my ancient version.

And of course there was the usual slate of sponsored artists signing stuff.

After the NAMM show in Anaheim this week (post and pictures coming soon) Jason and I headed up to Hollywood to catch the Alan Parsons Project at the House of Blues.

Alan Parsons Project

Alan led the band from a riser at the back of the stage. In addition to being great musicians, each member of the band also had vocal chops – each one of them was lead singer on at least one of the songs.

Costa Rica Trip

It isn’t that I haven’t been blogging lately, it’s that I have been blogging HERE. Instead I’ve been blogging here.

We spent 10 wonderful days in Costa Rica touring the country. I took over 1500 photographs, all geotagged via a GPS I carried along. I also kept a journal of the trip. Then I spent all of last week going through the images, winnowing them down to ‘only’ 138, and then building the travel blog out of my journal. Whew.
