DreamWorks Educators' Symposium

I spent Monday at DreamWorks’ Glendale campus as a part of their Educators’ Symposium. It was fun to be back on campus – this time as an invited teacher, which made it rather unique. Alex McDowell gave an in depth talk about design for live action and animated features in the digital age, including examples from his work on Minority Report, The Terminal, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Bee Movie. He also gave us a sneak peak at the special trailer of Watchmen that was only screened at Comic-Con. Though I’m very familiar with all the ways that digital design is being used in production, Alex has a unique and informative view on how it fits into the big picture, including an interesting workflow chart (that makes more sense when he walks you through it).

They also screened a sequence from Madagascar II and a 3D sequence from Monsters Vs. Aliens. Since these aren’t due out for a bit, I won’t say anything other than they look fantastic and we laughed out loud all the way through both of them. I can’t wait for the final films!

We were also treated to a composite reel of student work from 24 schools that submitted pieces. It’s exciting to see the level of talent that is just coming of age now, and the breadth and variety of work that they’re doing.

Thanks DWA for a great day!

A Visual Dialog Between Father and Son

On Saturday, Eric and Kevin went to the Ferrari Challenge event at Laguna Seca Raceway. I’m guessing at Kevin’s motives here, but I’m pretty sure he was just trying to rub in what fun they were having without me: I received this video message from his phone to mine, titled “hehehehehehehehehe”:

I couldn’t let that stand, so I sent back a video showing that racing fun can be had right in our own back yard.

Kevin’s response: a single photo with a message loud and clear, titled “vrooooom vroooom.”

Bah! We’re having fun to!

Back from Costco, things take a turn for the worse at home. My photo response to him goes unanswered.

Dinner's On!

Dinner's On!
I’ve been looking at some incredible food photography on flickr lately. I love to cook, and am doing a lot of BBQ’ing this summer as our kitchen gets remodeled, but many of my attempts at food photography have been only so-so. So, I’m going to try to get better at it.

A few quick rules of thumb that I’ve noticed so far (kind of like the rule of thirds for general composition):

  • Shoot from a low angle. Looking straight down on a plate is boring, and makes the food look unappetizingly flat.
  • Use a shallow depth of field. This features the item you want to highlight, and makes the rest act more as supporting characters.
  • And of course, pay attention to the color and quality of the light. Soft light is best, and warm foods like warm light.

Of course, these are observations and guidelines, not real rules.

Above is a shot from the other night that’s going in the right direction. Note the fancy paper plate, as our kitchen is being remodeled and we have a very limited capacity for doing dishes.

My Comcast connection is evidently screaming fast today.

I checked my speed because my gmail account was incredibly slow, and of course it must be Comcast and not Google, right? Turns out I’m getting this from Google:

Gmail by Google
Temporary Error (502)

We’re sorry, but your Gmail account is currently experiencing errors. You won’t be able to use your account while these errors last, but don’t worry, your account data and messages are safe. Our engineers are working to resolve this issue.

Please try accessing your account again in a few minutes.

It lasted only about ten minutes but was very annoying. C’mon Google, I want my instant gratification!
