Stanford Magazine

The July/August issue of Stanford Magazine ran a cover story on Stanford in Hollywood. I was fortunate to be among the alumni mentioned, and am included in a Flash illustration (I can’t include the link, but go to the page and click on “The Players,” bottom right). That’s me in about the middle.

I’m trying a creative experiment. I’ve been impressed with photographers I’ve seen who have done “a picture a day” and decided to give it a try myself. The basic idea is to take and post one image each day that represents something about that day. Some people go very hard core and only allow themselves to snap the shutter once each day – I’m taking a different approach and have made my own rules:

  • Image manipulation of any form is okay. I might use a straight photograph, or create something from scratch in Photoshop.
  • I can shoot as many images as I want and choose the best one. Or heck, make a collage out of all of them!
  • Any creative image output is okay. Video counts, as long as it was created just that day. Drawings count. Screen dumps count. Music or writing doesn’t count.
  • If I’m unable to post that day, I can post later and backdate so that the archives work. (This is an allowance because I like to be in places that have no connection.) No empty slots are allowed – so I can’t put up a new day until I’ve caught up with past posts.
  • The goal is to push myself creatively, not to just post snapshots of what I did that day. I hope that the images are interesting to look at.
  • I’ll geotag when possible and relevant.

I have the first six days done! Check it out at www.anirama.com/apadblog.

Fourth of July – Carol Channing!

I’m normally not a celebrity hound, but there was something about seeing Carol Channing at a Fourth of July party that made me have to say hi to her. “Hello Dolly” was played a lot in my house, and when she sang it yesterday it brought back memories of my dad singing along. I had to go up and thank her for that. She was really sweet.

Wakeboarding at Fallen Leaf Lake
We went back up to Fallen Leaf Lake to retrieve our boat after being evacuated due to the Angora Fire. Took a couple of wakeboarding runs, this one with my new Olympus 770 waterproof camera.

From this side of Angora Ridge it’s almost impossible to tell you are only a mile from the burn area.

Angora Fire – Lake Tahoe

We spend a week each summer at Stanford Sierra Camp by Fallen Leaf Lake. We had only been there 24 hours where the fire bell rang due to the Angora Fire. The fire started over the ridge but only about 2 miles from us. This is a picture only about an hour after the fire began:

At this point, the fire is burning a few hundred acres and within about a mile of us. Luckily fire doesn’t like to go downhill, so we were somewhat sheltered on our side of the ridge. After about two hours we were all evacuated out to Tahoe City. We stopped on the far side of Emerald Bay to look back at the fire’s progress.

You can see trees bursting into flames along the Angora Ridge, flames were up to 400 feet high.

We were lucky that we only lost a vacation. Over 200 people lost their homes and 3100 acres were burned.

Dramatic images and videos from the staff at Stanford during the fire:
